We have changed our name to Addiction Professionals Substance Misuse Management in General Practice (SMMGP) was started more than 20 years ago as a 'grass-roots' network by a GP and others who were treating people who used drugs. They identified the need for a network for the addictions workforce, focusing on education and guidance. In 2017 SMMGP took over the function of the well-known and established Federation of Drug and Alcohol Professionals (FDAP) that included registration and accreditation of practitioners. This was a good match as the aims of both organisations, to support the addictions workforce and provide quality assurance, were closely aligned. Today the joint organisation has a growing and diverse membership from different disciplines working in a number of areas in the addictions sector, including behavioural addictions. Our members come from a wide range of professional backgrounds including GPs, psychiatrists, counsellors, keyworkers, pharmacists, psychologists, social workers, nurses and mentors. We have decided to change the name of the organisation to reflect the growth and prominence of our organisation in the field of addiction treatment. Addiction Professionals As Addiction Professionals, we offer a range of membership options to support practitioners throughout their careers, from voluntary registration and accreditation in our role as regulatory body, to regular continuing professional development through news, networking and education. We have an extensive network of members from a wide range of professions and settings in the addictions field. We aim to raise and uphold high standards and quality in the addictions workforce.
