About me and my practice

Although I initially trained as an Integrative Counsellor I work in a mainly Person Centred way by creating a safe reliable trusting space for clients to explore their own addictive patterns of behaviour. I also use Motivational Interviewing, CBT as well as other working solution focused methods within my structured approach.

I believe that real change comes about when the client has been given the safe environment and the encouragement to explore the core issues that have brought them to the place they are today. I believe given the right set of circumstances the client needs to discover and reach self-actualisation. If you are told what your core issues are will you listen and take it on board? I believe we all have to reach self-discovery to make a lasting change in our cycle of life. I am able to listen without judgment and steer the client towards ultimate self-actualization and when required I am able to push the client beyond their own comfort zones in a patient, calm manner.

I feel I am able to empathise and understand on a much deeper level as my background in addiction started at a very young age where I battled for many years with drug abuse. My own journey in addiction has taught me many things but the most important thing is empathy. Being able to truly understand another addict and help them on their journey into recovery has been incredibly powerful and a mutually rewarding experience.

After years of struggling to keep everything together and failing miserably I knew that I had to stop using and managed to put it down after a few more slips and managing to control my addiction for the past 12 years by gaining self-awareness as well as tools that help me in trigger situations. I began working in the care sector and quickly realised that I was using basic counselling skills in my every day work so decided to begin an introduction course. I fully enjoyed this and submerged myself into formal training to become a Qualified Therapist, after 4 years of study and work.

My own journey in addiction has taught me many things but the most important thing is empathy. Being able to truly understand another addict and help them on their journey into recovery has been incredibly powerful and a mutually rewarding experience.
