Why are we changing our name?

SMMGP (short for Substance Misuse Management in General Practice) was started more than 20 years ago as a 'grass-roots' network by a GP and others who were treating people who used drugs. They identified the need for a network for the addictions workforce, focusing on education and guidance. In 2017 SMMGP took over the function of the well-known and established Federation of Drug and Alcohol Professionals (FDAP) that included professional registration and accreditation of practitioners; this was a good match as the aims of both organisations, to support the addictions workforce and provide quality assurance, aligned. Today the two organisations have a growing and diverse membership from different disciplines working in a number of areas in the addictions sector, including behavioural addictions. Our members come from a wide range of professional backgrounds including GPs, psychiatrists, counsellors, keyworkers, pharmacists, psychologists, social workers, nurses and mentors. We have decided to change the name of the organisation to reflect this growth and diversity.

We are changing our name, not our focus

Nothing else will change! We would like to reassure our members that the change of name does not mean we will be changing our focus of supporting and connecting the addictions workforce.

When did the name change happen?

We changed our name on 4th May 2021.

What does this mean for my membership?

There will be no change to the terms and conditions of membership, other than the change of name.

My membership certificate has the FDAP name and logo on it. Does this mean it is still valid?

All membership certificates issued with the FDAP logo and name a year prior to the name change (04.05.21) will remain valid.

My accreditation certificate has the FDAP name and logo on it. Does this mean it is still valid?

All accreditation certificates issued with the FDAP logo and name three years prior to the name change (04.05.21) will remain valid.

If I continue to use the FDAP logo and name on correspondence will this be a problem?

We will encourage everyone to change the logo and FDAP name on their websites, correspondence and communications with others as soon as possible. However we recognise that this process may take a while. If we notice that you are still using the FDAP logo after 6 months we will encourage you to change this.
