Emma Powell

About me and my practice

I have 15 years experience of working in addiction. I set up and managed a support group for addiction to self-harm. Later I facilitated aftercare groups at a private rehabilitation hospital in Bristol. Following that, I spent six years working for an addiction counselling charity as an assessor and therapist. I have spent the past three years working for a Supported Housing Association in their drug and alcohol abstinence-based supported accommodation service. I counsel clients on a one-to-one basis, facilitate process groups, psycho-educational workshops. I’m an integrative counsellor which means that I use methods and tools from a variety of therapeutic modalities and incorporate them in to our sessions. The focus of my counselling training was in the Person-Centred Approach and I use the concepts of this theory as the foundation of my work. What underpins all my work however, is the connection between the two of us so I like to play an active role in building that relationship. I ask questions, I offer reflections, I share my insights where I think it appropriate, and I invite you to get curious about yourself.
